Grouse Hunting: The Most Exciting Wing Shooting Experience

1 min read

Grouse are by far the most difficult wing shooting you will ever encounter. The thick cover they live in and the thunderous explosion of a flushing grouse can rattle the most experienced hunters.

When you hear the flush of a grouse in heavy cover, you have a second or two to locate which direction the thunderous wing beats are coming from, swing, and shoot. There is very rarely any aiming when it comes to grouse because of the speed they use to put cover between them and us.

I find it to be the most satisfying bird hunting that I have ever done.

The Sounds and Smells of the Autumn Woods

The smell of the fresh leaves on the ground and the cool autumn breeze makes you feel alive.

Listening to the sound of the bell on the dog's collar tinkling through the trees until the rhythm becomes more erratic and its silence lets you know he’s on point.

As you ease toward the last location of the bell, your heart starts to race in anticipation of the sound of thundering wings.

When the Grouse Flushes

You see a brown blur flashing through the trees, and if you’re not already swinging, you’re too late.

If you are fortunate enough to harvest a bird or two, you are in for the best-tasting bird on the planet.

If you weren’t fortunate enough to get a bird, you still had the pleasure of hearing the sound of the thunder chicken.
