The Breath of a Hurricane: A Day in the Tree Stand

Oct 11
1 min read

Today, I was sitting in my tree stand, feeling the breeze. A hurricane is approaching from the tropics, moving up through the Gulf of America. 😁

October deer hunting from a tree stand as strong winds move through autumn woods before an approaching hurricane.

Normally, the wind has a steady rhythm of ebb and flow. Today, I can feel it breathing like a sleeping dragon. A long, steady rush of wind, like an exhale out of the southeast, is followed by a slow inhale from the northwest. It’s the breath of the hurricane, swirling the air and not knowing which way to go.

The blue jays are agitated, warning the rest of the woods that a storm is coming. The crickets sing off and on, confused by the barometric pressure changes. I can see the trees twisting in the wind, bending back and forth while their leaves shudder and fall loudly to the ground, dramatically hitting every branch on the way down.

The temperature is still in the sixties, but it is already October, and fall is in the air. The deer have moved into their thickets, and I’ll be back after the storm has gone.

I have been blessed with another beautiful day and have been a part of nature, feeling its breath on my face as it rocked me slowly in my tree stand.

Yahweh! Yahweh!

I hear you, Lord. 🙏🏻
