Walking In My Heroes Footsteps

As a kid, I didn’t realize how blessed I was to follow the greatest sportsman I’ve ever known. At the early age of four, I was introduced to the world of hunting and fishing. Before that, I would sit for hours listening to the tall tales of past hunting and fishing adventures. You could see the stars in my eyes when my hero would describe in the greatest detail a memory of a day afield.

Father and Son Fishing

Early Memories

He told stories about spending the night in a duck blind and waking up to find the entire shore edge and beach covered with geese. The painful watching of the clock until legal shooting light. The geese were almost out of range when they could finally shoot, and they only managed to harvest three out of a thousand that had been merely three feet from the blind. My hero was a law-abiding man, and he would insist that his peers were too.

Chasing Game

I walked a thousand miles in his footsteps, chasing rabbits, squirrels, pheasants, grouse, woodcock, ducks, and deer. We fished for bass, crappie, bluegills, pike, perch, bullheads, carp, and walleye. If it swam, flew, or walked and had an open season, we chased it. With every step he took, he was teaching me about everything in nature.

Learning from the Best

He knew all of the plants and animals that we interacted with. I learned how to read tracks and other signs to find game. He taught me how to read the body language of a dog so I could tell if it was on the scent or just covering ground. I learned how to keep track of directions without any effort because of his wise words: "If you’re always looking forward, you won’t know your way back. Study the terrain as you walk and make a map of what you see so when you need to get back to where you came from, you can!"

A Love for the Outdoors

My hero taught me how to love every second in the outdoors because a slow day hunting or fishing is better than any day at work.

After walking with your hero while creating the best memories of your youth and experiencing the best teacher you’ve ever had, I only have one thing to say: Thanks, Dad!
