Fall Snake Safety: Be Aware When Walking in the Woods
With fall fast approaching, we need to use extra caution when walking through the woods.
Snakes can be very aggressive this time of year. Old timber rattlesnakes are
looking for mates and are on the move. Copperheads are invisible until they
move and can ruin a good day in the woods. This spring I had numerous
encounters with snakes including a timer rattlesnake.
A Six-Foot Timber Rattlesnake Three Feet Away
I was sitting under a tree trying to entice a turkey into a food plot, when I saw a clump of grass moving in a weird pattern. I thought it might be a mole or something. But then the grass behind it started
moving and the realization hit me that a large snake was coming straight
towards my feet. I slid my feet back and stood up so I could get a better look
at it. A six foot long timber rattlesnake three feet away; I got a little bit of a chill up my spine.
Look Up, Look Down, and Pay Attention
I even had one large black rat snake in a tree above my set up while turkey hunting. I heard
something in the branches overhead and looked up to see a very long snake hanging eight feet over my head.
In the woods, sometimes you have to slow down and look twice
The point is that we don’t have to be afraid, we just have to slow down and be aware of where we put our feet and our rear ends.
