The Anticipation of Opening Day
Hunters are some of the only people who get to experience all of the gifts every new day brings.
Every fall, hunters all over America wake up on opening day of hunting season with the greatest anticipation of dawn. It’s like Christmas morning for children, except the visions are of deer with giant antlers running through our heads. We climb out of bed early to go over every detail of our plan, load our gear into our vehicle, and make our way to the stand or blind we have set up. And then, we wait for that magic to start.
When the Woods Come Alive
Wind gently blowing through the trees, with branches clicking together in rhythm with the rustling leaves. As darkness slowly gives way to shadows that reveal shapes within the growing light, the sky lightens and birds begin to make the softest sounds.
A squirrel moves from its den onto a branch in search of an acorn.
Off in the distance, an owl says goodnight to the darkness, and a coyote answers his acknowledgment.
The Hunter’s Eyes and Ears
As the world comes into view, the hunter’s eyes and ears strain to collect any information that may inform them that a deer is moving in their direction.
The beauty of daybreak is overwhelming for our minds as gray turns into colors, and light finds its way into every shadow, revealing our world in the great outdoors.
Christmas Every Day
If everyone could see a morning through a hunter’s eyes and ears, they could have Christmas every day too!
